“It’s quite some city you have here.” Edward Markham said to the man on his left, looking at Eva sitting on his right at the top of the dinner table.

She smiled, nodded, her attention on the feed from the bug in Finch’s room playing through her earpiece. Still silent, maybe he was off eating dinner too.

“They call it little London, because of the skyscrapers.” The man said proudly.

“Oh, they’re not skyscrapers.” Markham told him. “But they do have to compete with the mountains.”

The sound of the door closing in Eva’s ear almost made her jump. She looked down at her dessert, focussing on what was happening in a different part of the city, sounds that didn’t tell her anything specific.

“Don’t you think?” The Prime Minister was asking her.

She smiled and nodded, though she had no clue. They’d all think she was a bimbo, which was fine with her.

“So which one?” He pressed.

“The first.”

“Right then.” He got to his feet and tapped his glass with a knife. “Ladies and gentlemen, I was going to give a speech about friendship and co-operation but my associate here,” he flapped a hand at Eva, “tells me you’ve all had enough of speeches, and this is supposed to be an informal dinner.” He paused for the laughter. “So, all I’ll say is it’s our pleasure to be here in Quetta,” he raised his glass, “to Little London.”

“It’s nothing like London here.” The man beside her moaned. “Apart from if you consider this hotel was blown up last year.”

“London’s not habitually blown up.” The woman opposite rebuked him, giving Eva an eye-roll. Was she her contact? None of the guests had paid her any attention, she’d noticed no questioning glances through dinner at her.

The guests left in keeping with Markham’s itinerary timing, his back office working hard to keep things running to his schedule. It gave Eva time to change to be ready for a call to action.

She was halfway up the grand staircase when she heard her name. Markham waited for her while she went back down.

“Thank you for a lovely evening, Prime Minister. It’s been fascinating to see what you do.”

“We haven’t had the chance to talk yet, so we need to put that right.”

“I’m sorry, I can’t now.” She smiled tightly. How could she say no to a man no one said no to? Maybe he respected brutal honesty? Maybe he didn’t hear enough of it? “I have an urgent report I have to look at.” Not quite honesty, but as close as she could get to it.

“We can make it a working chat. Unless this is more of a practical nature? Is it, here?”

“I’m afraid I can’t talk about specifics.”

That stare again.

“Is that why you wanted to come?”

Eva stood taller. “I wanted to come to understand more of how you work, to see how you’re fighting for the British people.”

“Is that what you think this is?” He gestured at the shiny tiled walls, at the chandelier behind them. “A fight?”

“Isn’t it? We came here to pay respects to those who were unlawfully killed by someone with an unspeakable agenda.
